Monumentality

Description

Design and create a new monument or sculpture to be put in the empty space created by the various monuments currently being removed from public spaces. Reimagine what that space could be used for or who that space could be used by. What or who is worth making a monument to?

Design your monument in any of the softwares taught in the class. Then 3D print a prototype of your monument. You will present your 3D printed monument at critique along with a statement describing the purpose, intent, and any other important details of the monument.

Objectives

Objectives of the project are to further explore and develop:

A workflow for 3D modeling and printing
As finished 3D printed object

How 3D modeling could be used as art or as a way to reimagine the world

Requirements

Your project should include:

  • A finished 3D model
  • A 3D print of your model

    On your blog:
  • Project Proposal
  • Artist Research Assignment
  • Process Posts (min. 3) – Weekly
  • 2-3 images of your 3D model
  • 2-3 images of your printed model
  • A 2-3 paragraph statement about your “monument”

Project Proposal guidelines

  • Once your objects are chosen, create a blog post with photos, a description of the objects, why you chose the objects, and what you think their juxtaposition or relationship might mean.

Artist research guidelines

  • 2 paragraphs on the artist, a particular work, or body of work (What do you like/do not like about it? Is there something that inspires in the work?)
  • The artist’s website
  • Attach an image of your favorite work of the artist
